In the Express Entry system, immigration candidates are ranked against each other and only the highest-ranked applicants receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence. The merit-based points system, known as the Comprehensive Ranking System, developed by the Canadian government works by assigning a score to each candidate in the pool. Scores are assigned based on certain factors, which are split into 4 categories. For each cluster, the candidate can be awarded a maximum number of points. Let’s look at the main factors that go into determining how many points a candidate earns in the Comprehensive Ranking System.
Core/Human Capital Factors
Factors such as your age, experience living in Canada, level of education and language will determine your score in the Comprehensive Ranking System. Another factor involves whether you have a spouse or partner that’s accompanying you to Canada. Language proficiency can earn you up to 160 points. All human factors in the CRS can earn you a maximum of 500 points. If you are applying for permanent residence with a spouse or partner, you can earn extra points if they have Canadian experience, a higher level of education and language proficiency. That’s why it’s always advised that the stronger spouse or partner becomes the principal applicant. An experienced immigration lawyer can advise best on how to approach such an application.
Spouse Or Common-Law Partner Factors
If applying with a spouse or common-law partner, you can earn a maximum of 40 points depending on their level of education, language proficiency, and Canadian work experience. For instance, if your spouse is proficient in the official language in Canada, you can earn a maximum of 20 points. If your spouse has a post-secondary education, you can earn a maximum of 10 points. Candidates who have a spouse with Canadian work experience also get up to 10 points.
Skills Transferability
Factors that go into determining whether your skills are transferable can earn you a maximum of 100 points in the Comprehensive Ranking System. This includes things like your level of education and foreign work experience. In this section, your language proficiency is also greatly considered. If you hadn’t done well in the IELTS, your immigration lawyer may advise you to retake this test in order to earn more points under this section. You can be able to claim up to 100 points with strong language proficiency.
Other Factors That Can Earn You Points In The CRS
There are up to 600 points awarded to candidates who apply for Express Entry and they are determined by other factors such as whether the candidate has a connection in Canada. If you have a brother or sister who’s living in Canada as a citizen or permanent resident, you may claim up to 15 points. Additionally, you can get extra points for having advanced French language skills. Individuals who have an arranged employment in Canada can be awarded up to 200 points whereas those with a PN nomination can get a maximum of 600 points.
